How much does it cost to Apostille a document?
At Corporate Apostille, we help countless “do it yourself” individuals Apostille their documents. The question of “how much does it cost to Apostille a document” is simple, provided you don’t put a price on your own time.
$13 plus postage.
If your document is “exemplified”, like an original birth certificate with the proper embossments, you need only to bring the document to the Westchester County Clerk and receive a “yellow tag”. This is a small slip of paper that is stapled to your document to signify that the document is original and “ready to go”.
If your document is not exemplified, you will need to first have it notarized. And here’s the great news; if you’re a Westchester County resident, notarization is free at the County Clerk’s office in White Plains. Once notarized, your document can receive a “blue tag” that signifies that the notary’s commission is valid and in good standing.
The second step is to mail your document to Albany with a self-addressed stamped envelope. You’ll need to enclose a check for $10 made payable to the New York State Department of State as well.
Now you’ll wait about 3 or 4 weeks. The Department of State will use your pre-paid envelope to mail your apostille back to you.
So why do we charge $149 for this service when it’s only $13 plus postage?
- We handle the notary portion without the travel to the County Clerk.
- We handle the blue or yellow tag process for you without the travel to the County Clerk.
- We handle the forms, fees, and mail to the Department of State and, we send FedEx, to avoid the PO Box address.
- We prepare the return mailer large-format envelope and postage.
The only thing we can’t do for the $149, is track the progress of your Apostille application. Once your Apostille heads to Albany, it’s a waiting game.
For accurate tracking, the Apostille would need to be processed with either 10 day, 5 day, or 24 hour expedited processing.
